COPE and coping with plagiarism

COPE -- the Committee on Publishing Ethics -- is holding its next European Seminar in Brussels, Belgium, on 14 March 2014. The theme of this year's seminar is “European perspectives on publication ethics”. Editors, publishers, authors and all those interested in publication ethics will be attending; the full programme will be available shortly. The seminar will include invited talks, in addition to breakout workshop sessions in the afternoon with discussion of ethical cases.

JIPLP, a member of COPE, is firmly committed to the maintenance of a high standard of publishing ethics. This is no mere paper commitment: every year we receive a number of articles for publication that contain unattributed borrowings from the published works of others, so we are always vigilant in dealing with suspected plagiarism.  It is astonishing that plagiarism is a problem even for a journal that deals with issues such as copyright infringement, and we should like to take this opportunity to remind prospective contributors that unattributed borrowings will not be tolerated.
